How To Unclog A Dishwasher With Standing Water

by | Jan 27, 2020 | Concierge, For Homeowners

If you notice standing water at the bottom of your dishwasher, you might need to take action. While there are several reasons why your dishwasher may not be draining properly, many of these issues can be resolved without calling a professional. Try these troubleshooting tips to unclog a dishwasher before calling a professional.

Troubleshooting Steps: Unclog a Dishwasher with standing water

  1. Turn Off the Power
Before you begin, unplug the dishwasher or switch off the circuit breaker in your electrical panel to avoid electric shock.
  2. Remove the Standing Water
Place towels under the dishwasher to catch any spills. Use a large cup or container to scoop out the water into a bowl or sink. When the water level gets too low to scoop, soak up the remaining moisture with a towel.
  3. Check the Drainage System
If your dishwasher isn’t draining, it could be due to food particles or debris clogging the drainage system. Look atthe dishwasher drain and clean the basket around the lower sprayer arm. Use a wire hanger to clear any debris and ensure no large objects are blocking the sump area in the back of the tub.
  4. Clean the Pump
The pump in your dishwasher has two impellers: one pumps water into the dishwasher, and the other pumps it out. Debris like broken glass can block the impellers, causing water buildup. Remove any debris to clear these blockages.
  5. Clean the Sprayer Arms
Carefully remove the sprayer arms from the bottom of the dishwasher. Check for food debris in the holes and clean them out with a wire hanger. Rinse the arms with warm water to remove any remaining debris, then set them aside.
  6. Clean the Dishwasher Filter
Refer to your owner’s manual to locate the dishwasher filter, usually found on the bottom near the back. Use a screwdriver to remove it, rinse it off with water, and clean the surrounding area with a damp sponge. Replace the filter and sprayer arms.
  7. Check the Supply Line
If standing water persists after cleaning the screen and drainage areas, the supply line may be clogged. Locate the supply line under your sink, place a bucket underneath to catch any water, and disconnect the plumbing line that feeds into the main drain. Clear any clogs with a snake, reattach the line, and run an empty cycle in the dishwasher.
  8. Clean the Drain Line
Find the drain line near the back of the dishwasher, under the filter screen. Create a paste using 1/2 cup of baking soda and 1/2 cup of water, and pour it into the drain line through the filter screen. Add 1/2 cup of vinegar and let the solution sit for 15 minutes. Then, flush the line with hot water.
  9. Straighten the Drain Hose
Locate the drain hose under the sink, which is often held by clips or screws. Older hoses may develop kinks that can cause blockages. Gently straighten any kinks in the hose.
  10. Run the Garbage Disposal
If an air gap in the connecting hose is preventing drainage, disconnect the drain hose from the garbage disposal and clear any blockages with a flat-head screwdriver. Ensure the kitchen sink drain is clear and run the disposal. Avoid placing your hands in the garbage disposal to prevent injury.
  11. Run a Complete Cycle
Restore power to the dishwasher and run a full cycle. Once complete, check if any water remains. If there’s still standing water, it may be time to call a professional. If you have a home warranty, file a claim and schedule a service technician visit.

How to Prevent Standing Water in Your Dishwasher

To avoid future water buildup, consider these tips:

  • Use the Correct Detergent
Ensure you’re using the right type of detergent—pods, powder, or liquid—as specified in your manufacturer’s manual to prevent drain clogs.
  • Load the Dishwasher Properly
Improper loading can hinder drainage. Follow the guidelines in the manufacturer’s manual: load cups and small bowls on the top rack, utensils in the silverware holder, and plates and large bowls on the bottom rack.
  • Listen for Unusual Noises
During a wash cycle, listen for humming or clicking sounds, which might indicate that the drain pump and motor need replacement. Since these parts are essential for proper drainage, replace them promptly if needed.
  • Maintain Your Dishwasher Regularly
Adhere to the recommended maintenance schedule as outlined in the manufacturer’s manual.

When to Call a Professional

If you cannot unclog a dishwasher after following these steps, it may be time to consult a professional. A service technician will assess whether a repair or replacement is needed. If a repair is possible, it will likely be done during the visit. If a replacement is necessary, a follow-up appointment will be scheduled to install the new dishwasher.
